1 new COVID-19 death reported in Kerr County

17 people have died from the virus since Jan. 1.

The last full week of January may end up being one of the deadliest in Kerr County’s fight against COVID-19 after the Texas Department of State Health Services said a second person died on Jan. 24.

In its data release on Friday, DSHS reported the last full week of January now has six deaths from COVID-19, and the data is still coming in. January is now tied with November 2020 as the fifth most deadly month for the virus since the start of the pandemic.

More than 200 people from Kerr County have died from the virus, well above the DSHS official total of 160 — a number that doesn’t include deaths at Peterson Health, nursing homes and other care facilities.

On Friday, the sliver of good news was that hospitalizations continued to fall — to just 11,100 people, which is the smallest number since Jan. 10. While still high compared to previous outbreaks, the decline in cases continued with 21,000 people testing positive. Since Dec. 23, Texas has experienced 44 consecutive days with 10,000 or more cases — more than 1.5 million people.

In Kerr County, DSHS estimated about 30 new cases. Peterson Health, possibly waylaid by the weather, did not update its case counts or hospitalizations.
