In the bottom of the third, Gerardo Cardoza hit an RBI single and later scored on a single by Joseph DiCarlo — cutting the Howard Payne lead to 6-4.

After the rough second inning, the Mountaineers got some solid pitching from Justin Gallegos, who pitched two-and-two-thirds innings with four strikeouts and one hit allowed.

After giving up a run in the top of the seventh, Schreiner manufactured a run with senior catcher Dominick Garcia hitting a sacrifice fly to score DiCarlo.

In the eighth, Schreiner's defensive wheels came flying off with a two-error play that plated a run. Howard Payne scored twice more in the inning to boost the lead to 10-5.

The Mountaineers looked like they would rally in the bottom of the eight. Garcia came through with an RBI single with the bases loaded. But Howard Payne's defense settled down and allowed the one run in the inning — sealing a 10-6 victory.

Schreiner plays Friday for two-game series with Dallas Christian and Crowley's Ridge College in Dallas. The Mountaineers are now 2-2 on the season.

Senior shortstop Jet Muniz makes a throw to first base to complete a double play on Tuesday against Howard Payne.
