Dehoyos leads Schreiner men to first win of the season; women fall on the road

Alex Dehoyos scores 22 points to lead Schreiner men on Friday night.

With 22 points from Alex Dehoyos, the Schreiner University men's basketball team earned its first win of the 2021-2022 season with a 69-52 victory over Millsaps College of Jackson, Miss. on Friday night in Longview, Texas.

Junior transfer Darian Gibson scored 13 points, and first-year player Kamden Ross added 11 for the Mountaineers. Schreiner built an 18-point, 40-22 lead at halftime and held off Millsaps' second-half rally.

The Mountaineers shot 40% from the field, dominated the inside, and converted Millsaps' turnovers into points. DeHoyos had his second consecutive game with 20 points or more. Against Millsaps, the senior guard hit four 3-pointers.

Schreiner is now 1-3 on the season, face LaTourneau at 5 p.m. today in Longview

Women's Basketball

Willamette 66, Schreiner 50

Gabby Ivarra scored 15 points and had six rebounds, but Schreiner University's women's basketball team couldn't recover from a poor-shooting second quarter in a 66-50 loss against Willamette in Salem, Ore. on Friday.

The Mountaineers were outscored 39-17 in the second and third quarters, including 16-7 in the second. Schreiner missed 13 shots in the second quarter, including five 3-pointers.

It was the first game for Willamette in 18 months. The Oregon-based university did not compete in the 2020-2021 season. However, Willamette was raring to go and shot a torrid 54% from the field. Carolyn Ho scored a game-high 18 points.

Schreiner, now 1-2 on the season, will face Lewis and Clark today.
