Demauria Miles and Skye Thomas both hit clutch 3-pointers in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to help Schreiner University’s women’s basketball team secure a tight 72-70 victory over visiting Texas Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.
The victory improved Schreiner to 12-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, earning the Mountaineers the No. 3 seed and a quarterfinal matchup at 2 p.m. on Friday against St. Thomas at Trinity University in San Antonio. Schreiner has two previous wins against St. Thomas.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers needed a big game from Miles to finish out the regular season strong. Miles, the SCAC’s leading scorer, scored 17 points and had six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Elisa Peralta scored 13 points. Thomas came off the bench for 10 points.
Statistically, Texas Lutheran played the Mountaineers to a standstill, but it was the combination of the grit of Thomas and Miles. Miles’ only 3-pointer of the night helped the Mountaineers separate from the Bulldogs with 2:20 left in the game, 72-66.
The victory improved the Mountaineers to 16-9 — the best regular season record in the Mountaineers’ nine years in the conference.
