DPS searching for suspect in Kerrville hit-and-run that left California man dead

State troopers said the man was struck either Dec.9 or Dec. 10 along Bandera Highway

A California man died early Friday morning after being struck by an unknown vehicle while walking along Bandera Highway, about the 3 miles south of Kerrville, and the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident.

DPS said Yonathan Michael Tessema, 34, of Brentwood, Calif., was hit either late on Dec. 9 or in the early morning hours of Dec. 10. He was pronounced dead at 7:32 a.m. on Dec. 10. DPS said Tessema was walking southbound on Bandera Highway but was on the north side of the shoulder, walking against the flow of traffic.

DPS said they are actively searching for the driver and the vehicle involved in the incident.

DPS is asking for the public's help in the investigation and encourages people to call Kerr Crime Stoppers at 830-896-8477 or submit a Web Tip on their website: https://www.kerrtips.com. DPS said this is a secure and anonymous process.

DPS said drivers should be observant at night, minimize distractions, and exceed the speed limit. If you must walk along the roadway during dark hours, wear reflective clothing and use lights to make yourself visible, DPS said.
