Jeff Harris has won the Place 2 seat on the Kerrville City Council, but don’t expect his challenger to concede or accept the defeat quietly.
In a recount, Harris edged Barbara Dewell Ferguson by three votes on the recount, meaning she picked up five votes during Friday’s counting at the Kerr County Juvenile Probation building. But the issue now is that at least one vote is missing from the original tally — not that it would change the outcome, but it changes the context of the vote.
The hand recount finished with Harris totaling 1,812 votes and Ferguson 1,809.
Somehow, the recount discovered a missing vote, not enough to change the outcome, but it could raise questions about the process.
Harris and Dewell Ferguson combined to raise nearly $40,000 to fund their campaigns. Harris was the top fundraiser with more than $21,000, while Dewell Ferguson raised more than $17,000. Dewell Ferguson had to self-finance the recount.
Harris will be sworn-in on Tuesday. Now we’ll see if Dewell Ferguson challenges the outcome.
