Kerr County records 18th COVID-19 death in January

The latest death happened on Jan. 31.

Kerr County's COVID-19 January death toll continued its upward climb, with an 18th death reported by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Across Texas, COVID-19 appears to be on the retreat as hospitalizations and positivity continue to decline. Peterson Regional Medical Center reported 19 people hospitalized on Friday, including five in intensive care. Those numbers were slightly higher than Wednesday's report.

The one thing that is not declining is the death toll — primarily due to the backlog of reporting by DSHS. In Kerr County, 19 people have died in 2022 from COVID-19. This latest COVID-19 death happened on Jan. 31.

While DSHS claims 162 Kerr County deaths, the actual toll is far higher because DSHS doesn't count deaths at nursing homes, assisted living centers and other long-term care centers. There have been more than 40 deaths at those homes and facilities since the pandemic started.
