Darian Gibson picked the right time to have his best game of the season on Saturday afternoon. Since Gibson arrived in Kerrville from Division II Texas A&M International, expectations have been high, and he realized those with a season-high 27 point barrage in an 87-79 Schreiner University win over Dallas.
Another Schreiner standout, Kamden Ross, also delivered an epic game with 24 points and 19 rebounds — a season-high.
The Mountaineers needed those performances because they trailed Dallas 43-36 at halftime. Gibson erupted for 18 points in the second half, while Ross scored 14.
One of Gibson's three 3-pointers started Schreiner's scoring in the second half. However, Dallas held leads as large as nine points until senior guard Alex Dehoyos scored on a jumper to tie the game 73-73 with 4:40 left. The Mountaineers outscored Dallas 14-6 over the next four minutes to secure the road victory.
The Mountaineers outrebounded Dallas, 40-28.
The victory kept the Mountaineers tied for second-place with Trinity, beating Southwestern 85-65 on Saturday. Schreiner plays at Trinity on Tuesday night, before returning home for the regular-season finale against Dallas.
