Schreiner University senior guard Alex Dehoyos scored a team-high 21 points and dished out eight assists to lead the Mountaineers to an 81-76 road win at Sul Ross State in Alpine.
After losing its first three games, the Mountaineers have now won two of their last three games, and this time the bench showed strength for Schreiner. Coming off the bench, Darian Ross scored 13 points — a huge lift for a team struggling outside of its top five.
The Mountaineers held a 41-36 lead at halftime and played Sul Ross State even in the second half to secure the victory.
Mateus Reichert-Blume, who struggled offensively over the last three games, exploded for 17 points — tying his season-high. Coming into Saturday's game, Reichert Blume was just 2-of-14 from the field, including 1-of-8 from 3-point range. Whatever shooting troubles the sophomore guard from Brazil was suffering through evaporated against Sul Ross State, where he was 6-of-10 from the field.
After a slow start offensively, Dehoyos has scored 20 points or more in his last four games. On Saturday, Dehoyos had his best passing night with eight assists — a season-high.
Kamden Ross turned in 12 points for the Mountaineers. Ross gave Schreiner the cushion it needed with a dunk with 59 seconds remaining. Dehoyos added to free throws to help secure the victory.
Schreiner returns to action on Nov. 27 at Concordia in San Antonio. The time for that game has not been set. The Mountaineers will travel on Nov. 29 to Abilene for an exhibition game against Division I Abilene Christian.
