The Lead Jan. 3, 2022: What does Omicron look like for us today?

We should brace ourselves for many cases today, but there may be some good news when it comes to hospitalizations.

GOOD MORNING

We went from a spectacularly warm New Year's Day to a freezing morning on Jan. 2, when it was windy and dry. This morning — time for a layer or two. We can expect sunny, dry and mild temperatures throughout the week.

THE LEAD LIVE RETURNS WEDNESDAY

We're still off from the show for the first two days this week, but we return on Wednesday. We're working to line up the Kerr County Commissioner's Court Precinct 2 candidates for next week's show. We've lined up Stan Kubenka on Jan. 11 and Sonya Hooten on Jan. 14. We've reached out to the other candidates and waiting for their response.

THINGS WE'RE WATCHING THIS WEEK

  • We should get a better idea of what's going on with omicron this afternoon, or even this morning, after Peterson Health and the Texas Department of State Health Services didn't report over the holiday weekend. The New York Times estimated more than 160,000 cases on Saturday. How will that play out today? It's really hard to say, but last week's trend points toward more than 100 people testing positive today.
  • It's exhausting watching President Joe Biden and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott fight over COVID-19. Depending on your political persuasion, you may be rooting for this kind of fighting. However, Abbott has asked for federal aid managing the omicron surge.
  • "Detecting COVID-19 and preventing COVID-related hospitalizations are critical to our fight against this virus," said Gov. Abbott. "While the Biden administration has cut supplies of monoclonal antibody treatments and testing kits when they are needed most, the State of Texas is urging the federal government to step up in this fight and provide the resources necessary to help protect Texans. Testing sites, additional medical staff, and continued shipments of therapeutics from the federal government will help us continue to save lives and mitigate the spread of COVID-19."
  • Houston Methodist researchers provided greater context to the hospitalizations associated with omicron. Here's our story: https://kerrcountylead.com/houston-methodist-researchers-show-fewer-hospitalizations-with-omicron
  • The Kerrville Planning and Zoning Commission meets at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday with a light agenda — probably the lightest it will see in 2022. P&Z has two items to consider, including the annexation of about 63 acres of Commanche Trace into the city limits.
  • On New Year's Eve, the Texas Secretary of State's office dropped its findings from an audit of election results in Collin, Dallas, Harris and Tarrant counties. They found some problems — small problems. Here's our story: https://kerrcountylead.com/texas-secretary-of-state-finds-202-voting-irregularities-barely

HERE COMES THE STOCK SHOW

As the omicron surge continues, we will jam a lot of people into the Hill Country Youth Event Center this week. The show begins in earnest on Wednesday when the hooved mammals arrive at the center. The judging begins on Thursday, and the big auction is set for Saturday afternoon.

SCHREINER MEN MAKE IT TWO STRAIGHT

The Schreiner University men's basketball team posted another close victory, with an 87-82 win at Colorado College. The win evened the Mountaineers record at 2-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Schreiner put in plenty of work on the free-throw line by 25-of-34 shots. Senior Alex Dehoyos scored 11 of his game-high 20 points at the free-throw line. Mateus Richert-Blume broke out of a scoring slump by knocking down three 3-pointers and scoring 15 points.

TEXAS A&M UPDATE

The Texas A&M Aggies, who had to bow out of a bowl game because they didn't have enough healthy players, say they have the best recruiting class in the country coming to College Station. The numbers support the argument. ESPN reports the Aggies signed the nation's No. 1 linebacker, No. 2 wide receiver and the No. 5 defensive back. Texas and Baylor were in the hunt for those players, but A&M coach Jimbo Fisher got the win.
