IRVING, Texas — The Schreiner University baseball team was swept in a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series at the University of Dallas on Feb. 28 and March 1, dropping all three contests by scores of 6-1, 12-5, and 12-9 to fall to 4-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
In the opener Saturday morning, Dallas right-hander Liam Mosley was near-unhittable, allowing just four hits and one run across 8.2 innings while striking out 10. The Mountaineers were held scoreless through eight innings before Blake Juarez drove in a run in the ninth to avoid a shutout. Luke Gill homered as part of a six-run effort by the Crusaders. Tanner Beck absorbed the loss for Schreiner, falling to 1-2 on the season.
Dallas wasted little time asserting itself in the second game, scoring nine runs across the second and third innings to put the contest out of reach early. Schreiner starter Ethan Sullivan was reached for seven runs in 2.1 innings. Despite the deficit, Daniel Rodriguez plated two runs, and both Blake Juarez and Obie Martinez drove in a pair to account for Schreiner’s five runs. Cody Jenkins was 4-for-6 with two RBI for Dallas, and Luke Gill added his second home run of the day.
Schreiner gave its most competitive effort Sunday, putting together 15 hits and scoring nine times, but six errors proved costly in a 12-9 defeat. Austin Mueller led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort that included a home run and three RBIs. Ethan Costello added two hits and an RBI, and Nate Barrera contributed a pair of hits and an RBI as well. Hayden Oakes took the loss on the mound, dropping to 0-1. Dallas got home runs from Gill and Dylan Goddard, with Cody Jenkins driving in three more runs.
The Mountaineers will next travel to Howard Payne for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday, March 6.
Growing up in Southern California, Louis Amestoy remained connected to Texas as the birthplace of his father and grandfather. Texas was always a presence in the family’s life. Amestoy’s great-grandparents settled in San Antonio, Texas, drawn by the city’s connections to Mexico and the region’s German communities. In 2019, Louis Amestoy saw an opportunity to make a home in Texas. After 30 years of working for corporate media chains, Louis Amestoy saw a chance to establish an independent voice in the Texas Hill Country. He launched The Lead to be that vehicle. With investment from Meta, Amestoy began independently publishing on Aug. 9, 2021. The Amestoys have called Kerrville home since 2019.
The numbers from the Dallas series are stark. Schreiner was outscored 30-15 across three games and committed 13 errors — including six in the series finale — converting what should have been competitive ballgames into lopsided results.
Lohmeyer won the 10K in 44 minutes, 55 seconds — a 7:04-per-mile pace — finishing nearly six minutes ahead of Travis Linscomb, who was second in 50:58. Jared Pulliam took third in 52:19.
