Schreiner softball sweeps Dallas in three-game set
With the sweep, Schreiner sits sixth in the SCAC standings at 4-5 in conference play, tied with Austin College.
The Schreiner University Mountaineers swept the University of Dallas in a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series at home, winning 3-2 on Feb. 27 and then claiming a doubleheader on Feb. 28 by scores of 4-1 and 6-5. The sweep improved Schreiner to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the SCAC, extending the Mountaineers’ winning streak to four games.
Game 1: Schreiner 3, Dallas 2
Anyssia Mendoza went the distance in the opener, scattering six hits over seven innings while striking out four to improve to 5-2. The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Brinley Smith doubled to score Julianna Contreras, though Smith was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a triple.
Dallas answered with two in the sixth on a two-run single by pinch hitter Ava Aleman to take a 2-1 advantage. Schreiner tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Romy Nunez doubled to center field to score Isabel Moreno. The Mountaineers then walked off in the seventh when Zoe Salinas reached on a throwing error by Dallas second baseman Bre Barnes, allowing Sarah Almazan to score the winning run.
Game 2: Schreiner 4, Dallas 1
In the doubleheader opener, Celina Marchan delivered five shutout innings of relief to earn the victory after Briannah Mejias got through two frames. Dallas scored first in the top of the first on an RBI single by Kaylee Barajaz, but Schreiner tied it immediately in the bottom of the inning when Nunez singled to score Moreno.
The Mountaineers broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating three runs. Cambryn Holloway singled to score Salinas for a 2-1 lead, and a wild pitch from Dallas starter Emma Sherman allowed Moreno to score for a 3-1 advantage. Nunez then reached on a fielder’s choice to score Holloway and push the lead to 4-1. Moreno finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Holloway, Salinas and Moreno each contributed stolen bases.
Game 3: Schreiner 6, Dallas 5
The series finale required a four-hour battle before Schreiner completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory in walk-off fashion. Dallas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run double by Abby Lasley, and the Crusaders extended that advantage to 5-1 with a three-run fifth inning. Olivia Montoya entered in the sixth and held Dallas scoreless over the final two innings, allowing Schreiner’s offense to rally.
The Mountaineers chipped away with a run in the sixth before erupting for four in the seventh. Almazan’s RBI single made it 5-3, then Payton Eubanks-Smith delivered the key blow — a two-run double that tied the game at 5-5 and scored Almazan and Montoya. Salinas then ended it with a walk-off RBI single to right field.
Eubanks-Smith led all hitters in the game with three hits, two doubles and two RBI in four at-bats. Moreno went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Almazan and Salinas each drove in a run. Montoya (1-3) earned the win with two perfect innings out of the bullpen.
