Kerr County still has plenty of arts and culture to offer in the wake of flood

After a week dominated by our most recent flood, Kerr County’s calendar this week offers something closer to normal — a full slate of markets, live music, library programs and the return of “Fiddler on the Roof” to the Cailloux stage.

The week opens quietly Monday with the Mustard Seed Food Pantry outreach at The Light on the Hill and free veterans yoga at the Elks Lodge, then builds toward a Tuesday-through-Sunday run that touches nearly every corner of the community — kids’ programming, senior center games, wineries, churches, saloons and the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library’s packed summer schedule.

Library anchors the week

Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library is the workhorse of this week’s calendar, with events nearly every day: story time and a Hank the Cowdog scavenger hunt Tuesday, a Science Mill marble roller coaster lab and the Friends of the Library book sale Wednesday, two sessions of Lego and Duplo Club Thursday, and the summer reading awards party Friday. The library caps the week Saturday with an all-day family game day and two book club discussions.

Fiddler on the Roof opens Friday

The marquee event of the week is the opening night of “Fiddler on the Roof” at the Cailloux Theater on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with a preshow dinner available at 6 p.m. The production runs a second performance Saturday, also at 7:30 p.m.

Live music fills every night

Music venues across the county are booked solid. Highlights include Dale Watson & His Lone Stars at Lazy Days Canteen on Tuesday — part of Junior Pruneda’s 93rd birthday celebration — and a Saturday lineup that stretches from Singing Water Vineyards and Truffles & Vines to Gravity Check Saloon, Howdy’s Bar & Chill, Central Provisions and the Elm Waterhole Saloon at the YO Hotel. Crider’s Rodeo and Dancehall closes the weekend with its rodeo and dance Saturday night, headlined by the Matt Daniel Band.

Markets, workshops and the outdoors

Saturday morning draws Kerrville outdoors with the Kerrville Walking Group, Full Moon Yoga at The Ridge Marketplace, and two farmers markets — Hill Country Heritage Farmers Market and the Heart of the Hills Farmers Market. The Ridge Marketplace also hosts the Prickly-Pearadise Plant Show, while the Museum of Western Art offers a free family day with a scavenger hunt and crafts. Hands-on classes round out the week, from a garlic bowl workshop at The Color of Clay to inkle loom weaving and watercolor classes at The Rogue Skein.

Outreach continues

Amid the lighter fare, community outreach carries on: the Hill Country Veterans Center’s food bank Wednesday offers food, haircuts and clothing to veterans who bring a valid Texas ID and proof of service.
