Garcia’s Texas Tech degree claim is either premature or false

Mayoral candidate says he has a degree from Texas Tech, but there seems to be an issue with the facts.

Kerrville City Councilmember and mayoral candidate Roman Garcia touts his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University—one problem is that the university has no record of that degree.

On his campaign website, Garcia says he has a bachelor of arts in political science, with minors in legal studies and personal finance.

A records request from the university said they could not verify his degree. Still, they did provide several reasons why they couldn’t verify his, including a request for privacy from the graduate. However, the last three Texas Tech commencement ceremonies have no listing for a Roman Garcia in their programs, including hundreds of graduates’ names.

The Lead emailed Garcia for comment and clarification. Garcia did not immediately respond. However, Garcia said that he would not answer questions from The Lead.

While it’s possible Garcia is attending the Lubbock-based university, which has a satellite campus in Fredericksburg, his website posting suggests he’s earned the degree. The university was unable to verify if Garcia was enrolled.
