Schreiner women fall on the road at Concordia, 72-57

AUSTIN, Texas — The Concordia Tornados pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Schreiner University 72-57 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Friday night at Concordia Fieldhouse.

Tamia Moody led Schreiner (3-13, 1-6 SCAC) with 13 points, while Aylene Ortega added 11 points and six rebounds. The Mountaineers kept it close through three quarters but couldn’t overcome a cold shooting night, finishing at 25% from the field.

Destiny Mathews came off the bench to pace Concordia (7-7, 2-3 SCAC) with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Taysie Trejo and Kiki Gonzales each added 15 points.

Schreiner trailed by just one at halftime, 29-28, and was within six points entering the fourth quarter before Concordia pulled away with a 22-13 run in the final period. The Tornados took advantage of their size advantage, outscoring Schreiner 36-18 in the paint.

The Mountaineers hit nine 3-pointers but struggled inside the arc, going just 12-for-57 on two-point attempts. Brie Sosa added 10 points, including two 3-pointers for Schreiner.

The loss was Schreiner’s second to Concordia this season, following a 70-60 defeat in Kerrville on January 13. The Mountaineers will look to snap their three-game losing streak when they visit McMurry on Sunday.
