Schreiner baseball faces three-game series starting today against visiting Southwestern

The Mountaineers have shown resilience in tight contests this season, with five of their victories coming in games decided by two runs or fewer.

Schreiner University baseball returns to Kerrville Friday for a crucial Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Southwestern University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Bob Henry Field.

The Mountaineers (9-23, 7-17 SCAC) enter the three-game homestand with renewed confidence after their dramatic 6-4 extra-inning victory over league-leading Trinity last Friday. The win showcased Schreiner’s potential despite their current ninth-place standing in the 11-team SCAC.

Schreiner’s offense continues to be led by junior outfielder Daniel Rodriguez, who paces the team with a .381 batting average and 26 runs scored. Senior AJ Rodriguez provides additional firepower with a .349 average and team-leading 28 RBIs.

The Mountaineers’ pitching staff will look to sophomore Max Sauceda (3-3, 7.42 ERA) to lead the rotation against a Southwestern team that has lost eight straight games. The Pirates (10-19, 8-12 SCAC) sit seventh in the conference standings, giving Schreiner an opportunity to gain ground with a successful series.

Saturday features a doubleheader beginning at noon, with the series potentially having significant implications for conference tournament positioning. The Mountaineers have shown resilience in tight contests this season, with five of their victories coming in games decided by two runs or fewer.

After the Southwestern series, Schreiner concludes its home schedule April 25-26 against Texas Lutheran before the SCAC tournament begins in early May.
