Schreiner splits doubleheader against visiting Centenary

The Mountaineers will conclude their three-game series against Centenary (18-20, 13-15 SCAC) on Sunday with a single game scheduled for noon at the Schreiner softball field.

KERRVILLE, Texas — Schreiner University split its doubleheader against Centenary College on Saturday in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball action at the Mountaineers’ home field.

The Mountaineers took the second game 4-3 after dropping the opener 7-5, improving their record to 10-28 overall and 7-22 in conference play.

In the victory, Isabella Gutierrez (3-6) pitched a complete game, allowing just six hits and three earned runs while striking out two to secure the win. Schreiner jumped to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning when Lindsey Hues stole second base and Breyanna Jones scored on the play.

The Mountaineers added another run in the second inning on a passed ball that allowed Abigail Sliman to score. Centenary responded with three runs in the third to tie the game, but Schreiner regained the lead in the fifth when Jones singled, advanced to second on an error, and scored the decisive run.

In the first game, Centenary overcame an early deficit with a four-run seventh inning to win 7-5. The Ladies struck first with three unearned runs in the opening frame, but Schreiner battled back with two runs in the second inning when Aubrey Gilchrist delivered a two-run single.

The Mountaineers took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on Anyssia Mendoza’s RBI double that scored Kourtney Hurry. However, Centenary’s Laine Sullivan sparked the seventh-inning rally with an RBI single followed by Taylor Good’s two-run hit that put the Ladies ahead for good.

Schreiner showed impressive speed throughout the doubleheader, stealing six bases in the second game and three in the opener.
