Sword fights, turkey legs and mead: Renaissance Festival returns for 10th year

The festival runs three consecutive weekends — January 17-18, 24-25, and January 31-February 1 — at the River Star Arts and Events Park on the grounds of the Hill Country Youth Event Center, 3785 TX-27.

Knights in armor will clash, musicians will stroll through crowds in period costume, and turkey legs will be devoured when the Kerrville Renaissance Festival opens Saturday for its 10th anniversary season.

Gates open at 10 a.m. each Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine, and the merriment continues until 5 p.m.

“This is our 10th year bringing Renaissance culture and entertainment to the Texas Hill Country,” festival organizers said. “We’re celebrating with eight stages of world-class entertainment and more vendors than ever before.”

Entertainment across eight stages

Returning favorites include Judas and Magnolia, the German folk band Wolgemut, and Dublin Harpers. New this year is Port O’Thority, a band with a stage show that will host the festival’s Pub Crawl.

Amanda Kitchens Duo and Tobias the Adequate round out the musical lineup.

Beyond music, visitors can watch demonstrations by Ingram-based Vinland Texas Vikings and Last Chance Forever Birds of Prey. The festival also features contests, mazes, carriage rides, costumed players, dancers, magicians, jugglers, and strolling minstrels.

Festival organizers encourage guests to dress in period costume to join the celebration.

Marketplace and food

The Renaissance Festival Marketplace features dozens of artisans selling handmade wooden toys, leather accessories, clothing, hats, glassware, and jewelry.

The Food Court offers festival staples including funnel cake, cinnamon-roasted nuts, crepes, and the crowd-favorite turkey legs. New additions this year include spaghetti cones and mac and cheese brisket. Craft beer, wine, mead, and other adult beverages are also available.
