Another week of things to do, including honoring American heroes

The Flags of Honor observance takes center stage Saturday and Sunday at the Hill Country Youth Event Center, where 500 flags of remembrance will fill a field open to the public at no charge.

A weekend honoring fallen service members headlines a week of community events across Kerr County, featuring theatrical performances, flood-relief fundraising, and seasonal celebrations.

The Flags of Honor observance takes center stage Saturday and Sunday at the Hill Country Youth Event Center, where 500 flags of remembrance will fill a field open to the public at no charge. An opening ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, with food trucks and live music throughout the day. Taps will be played at sunset both evenings.

Theater enthusiasts can catch Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” at VK Garage Theater, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available through Cailloux Performing Arts.

The Tivy Athletic Hall of Fame will induct its newest class Thursday evening at the Hill Country Youth Event Center, with the ceremony and banquet beginning at 6 p.m. The celebration continues Friday night when Tivy hosts San Antonio McCollum at Antler Stadium at 7 p.m. for Hall of Fame Night.

Music lovers can support flood relief efforts Thursday evening at Trinity University’s Laurie Auditorium in San Antonio, where Symphony of the Hills and the Trinity Music Department present “A Time to Remember,” a tribute concert at 7:30 p.m. General admission is by donation, with all proceeds benefiting flood recovery.

Those seeking seasonal scares can join Downtown Kerrville Ghost Tours departing from the Kerr Arts & Cultural Center at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Hill Country Heritage Farmers Market and Heart of the Hills Farmers Market both run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, offering locally grown produce and handcrafted goods.

Growing up in Southern California, Louis Amestoy remained connected to Texas as the birthplace of his father and grandfather. Texas was always a presence in the family’s life. Amestoy’s great-grandparents settled in San Antonio, Texas, drawn by the city’s connections to Mexico and the region’s German communities. In 2019, Louis Amestoy saw an opportunity to make a home in Texas. After 30 years of working for corporate media chains, Louis Amestoy saw a chance to establish an independent voice in the Texas Hill Country. He launched The Lead to be that vehicle. With investment from Meta, Amestoy began independently publishing on Aug. 9, 2021. The Amestoys have called Kerrville home since 2019.
