Five-run eighth inning dooms Schreiner in 7-3 non-conference loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor

The Crusaders erupted for five runs in the eighth inning — three of them unearned on a Schreiner error — and closed with a run in the ninth to hand the Mountaineers a 7-3 non-conference defeat Tuesday afternoon at Schreiner Field.

Wyatt Henry held Mary Hardin-Baylor scoreless for six innings, and Schreiner carried a 3-1 lead into the eighth. Then the bullpen unraveled and the Mountaineers’ gloves did them no favors.

Schreiner committed four errors in the game, a decisive factor in a contest the Mountaineers had controlled for much of the afternoon. Henry was sharp in his six innings of work, allowing six hits while walking one and striking out three, but he exited with his team ahead. The bullpen could not hold it.

The Mountaineers struck first in the sixth when Kale Lackey singled to left field to drive in Daniel Rodriguez, who had reached on a walk. Blake Juarez followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0. Shawn Rivera extended the lead to 3-1 in the seventh with an RBI double to left field that scored Jacob Gonzales.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (13-5) trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the seventh on an error, then broke through in the eighth. With Trey Bennett on the mound, Austin Birkhoff doubled and scored on a catcher’s error, allowing two additional runners to come home on the play. Cameron Talburt followed with a run-scoring double, and Easton Cline singled home another to make it 6-3. Ryland Anders (W, 2-0) earned the win in relief for the Crusaders. Bennett (L, 0-1) absorbed the loss for Schreiner.

Schreiner (6-11, 4-5 SCAC) managed five hits on the evening, with Rivera’s double and Austin Mueller’s two-hit performance providing the offensive highlights. The Mountaineers went 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Schreiner University returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game homestand against Hendrix College, beginning Friday afternoon at Schreiner Field.

The series gets underway Friday at 2 p.m., with a doubleheader to follow Saturday starting at noon and 3 p.m.

Schreiner (6-11, 4-5 SCAC) enters the weekend sitting seventh in the conference standings, looking to put together back-to-back series wins after taking two of three from Howard Payne a week ago in Brownwood. The Mountaineers have shown the ability to compete at home and will need consistent pitching and cleaner defense after committing four errors against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday.

The challenge this week is a stiff one. Hendrix (11-5, 6-3 SCAC) arrives in Kerrville holding down second place in the SCAC standings, trailing only Texas Lutheran. The Warriors have won 11 of their last 16 contests and enter on a one-game winning streak. Their .667 conference winning percentage ranks them among the top teams in the league heading into mid-March.

Offensively, Schreiner has been led by a core group of contributors throughout the season. JD Blair, Daniel Rodriguez, Blake Juarez and Kale Lackey — a Kerrville native and Tivy High School graduate — have anchored the lineup, while Shawn Rivera has provided timely production in recent weeks. On the mound, Wyatt Henry’s performance against Mary Hardin-Baylor — six scoreless innings on six hits — is a template the Mountaineers will look to build on.

For Schreiner to take the series, the Mountaineers will need to keep Hendrix’s productive offense in check while reducing the defensive miscues that have plagued them at moments this season. A series win would push the Mountaineers back to the .500 mark in conference play and provide significant momentum heading into the back half of the SCAC schedule.
