Miles scores 24, Schreiner wins 6th straight SCAC game
Schreiner women, men earn a sweep against Centenary on Saturday in front of home crowd.
Schreiner University women’s basketball team’s offense exploded on Saturday afternoon, especially from 3-point range, as the Mountaineers routed visiting Centenary, 92-58.
The Mountaineers have won six consecutive games and are now 8-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Schreiner gets a week off before facing a crucial SCAC game in Kerrville on Jan. 31 against conference-leading and nationally-ranked Trinity College.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers pummeled Centenary with 13 3-pointers, including five from Demauria Miles, who scored a game-high 24 points. Miles continued her torrid scoring with her fourth consecutive 20-plus point effort. Josline Hernandez added 12 points — all from 3-point range.
The Mountaineers shot 52% from 3-point range and 85% from the free-throw line — 17-of-20. And this wasn’t an easy game at first for the Mountaineers because Centenary came out fighting.
Centenary played the Mountaineers even in the first quarter, 21-21. However, the Mountaineers’ relentless pressure started paying off in the second quarter by forcing Centenary into nine turnovers. The Mountaineers outscored Centenary 31-7 in points off of turnovers.
However, Hernadez extolled maximum damage on Centenary, with all four of her 3-pointers coming in the second quarter. Miles had 10 points in the quarter.
The Mountaineers separated for good in the third quarter by outscoring Centenary 26-9. Elisa Peralta scored six of her 15 points in the quarter. Madison Parham came off the bench to add six more points.
Schreiner men dominate the middle for win
The up-and-down season of the Schreiner University men’s basketball team had a decidedly up day on Saturday and got a key performance to post a 68-54 victory over visiting Centenary.
Cristian Rodriguez turned in a 15-point, 15-rebound game as the Mountaineers’ big men dominated the Gents. Kamden Ross added 12 points with five rebounds.
After a tight first half, Schreiner separated from Centenary — thanks, in part, to Rodriguez and Dylan Mackey, who scored 15 off the bench.
But it was Rodriguez’s play in the middle that pushed Centenary out of the game. The Mountaineers outscored the Gents 44-16 and outrebounded Centenary 40-23. In a season of tumult, it may have been the best game of the season for the Mountaineers, who are still awful from 3-point range.
The victory moves the Mountaineers to 4-6 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and 10-9 overall.
