Nonprofit week: Elevate Adult Education
Elevate offers GED preparation courses, ESL (English as a Second Language) and digital literacy classes covering basic computer use, Word, Excel and telehealth, with many available in Spanish. Classes start in mid-September.
Executive Director Misty Kohte discussed Elevate Adult Education, formerly Families and Literacy, which rebranded to better encompass its broader adult education programs.
Elevate offers GED preparation courses, ESL (English as a Second Language) and digital literacy classes covering basic computer use, Word, Excel and telehealth, with many available in Spanish. Classes start in mid-September.
A significant challenge involves the loss of office space, as Light on the Hill became a hub for flood recovery efforts. The organization actively seeks new volunteers, particularly English and math instructors for GED preparation and more ESL instructors.
Kohte expressed concern about “donor fatigue” and the flood’s potential impact on student participation and volunteer recruitment for all nonprofits. Volunteers and funding remain the organization’s biggest challenges.
