One step forward, one step back for Schreiner volleyball with loss to Colorado College

Schreiner dropped to 21-6 overall and 12-3 in SCAC play, while Colorado College improved to 18-7 and 10-4 in the conference.

Twenty-four hours after moving into a first-place tie in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Gold Division, Schreiner University’s volleyball team fell back to second Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Colorado College.

The Tigers defeated the Mountaineers 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18 at Stephens Family Arena, spoiling Schreiner’s chance to remain atop the conference standings after Friday night’s crucial victory over St. Thomas.

Schreiner dropped to 21-6 overall and 12-3 in SCAC play, while Colorado College improved to 18-7 and 10-4 in the conference.

Junior outside hitter Giana Hilliard led Schreiner with 20 kills and 16 digs, hitting .296 for the match. Junior middle blocker Ryleigh Jones added 11 kills on a .400 hitting percentage with three block assists.

The Mountaineers showed resilience after dropping the first two sets by narrow margins. Schreiner dominated the third set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and never trailing, hitting .224 compared to Colorado College’s .022.

But the Tigers regrouped in the fourth set, building leads of 8-3 and 10-4 before pulling away for the match-clinching victory.

Colorado College’s Brooke Brilliant finished with 13 kills on a .423 hitting percentage, while Camille Sherrill added nine kills. Setter Camden Goodman recorded 36 assists, and libero Meghan Gannon led all players with 22 digs.

Junior setter Harlie Gallaspy distributed 26 assists for Schreiner, while sophomore Gaby Torres added 28. Senior libero Jenna Palomarez anchored the defense with 21 digs.

Junior outside hitter Mackenzie Strban contributed 11 kills, while junior right side hitter Jesse Garner added eight.

The Mountaineers struggled offensively in the opening and closing sets, hitting .109 and .083 respectively. For the match, Schreiner hit .167 compared to Colorado College’s .182.

Schreiner closes its regular season Friday at 6 p.m. when it travels to McMurry.
