Schreiner advances to SCAC semifinals with victory over LeTourneau
The quick turnaround means Schreiner will focus on rest before facing Hendrix.
Giana Hilliard recorded 17 kills to lead No. 3 seed Schreiner past LeTourneau 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals Friday afternoon at Stephens Family Arena.
The Mountaineers (22-6, 13-3 SCAC) advance to face No. 2 seed Hendrix in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Schreiner showed resilience after dropping the third set, posting a .308 hitting percentage in the fourth set to close out the match. The Mountaineers recorded 58 kills as a team and held LeTourneau to a .168 hitting percentage.
“We battled, that’s what we knew, and we pulled it out at the end,” Schreiner coach Jeremiah Tiffen said.
Hilliard added 18 digs and two service aces for the Mountaineers. Ryleigh Jones contributed 10 kills and three block assists, while Jesse Garner and Mackenzie Strban each tallied 10 kills. Harlie Gallaspy distributed 36 assists, and Jenna Palomarez anchored the defense with 29 digs.
LeTourneau (19-11, 9-7) received a game-high 21 kills from Aubree McCann. Emily Mullin added 29 assists and seven kills for the YellowJackets.
“Number 24, she went off. Like she was phenomenal,” Tiffen said of McCann. “She might have been the best attacker on the court.”
Schreiner struggled in the middle sets, hitting just .075 in the second and .122 in the third. The Mountaineers narrowly held off LeTourneau 25-22 in the second set before dropping the third.
“That was the first time that they had really targeted Mac and Servicy,” Tiffen said. “So that was something that was different for us. We didn’t play very well in the second and third set. We got lucky to escape in that second set.”
The quick turnaround means Schreiner will focus on rest before facing Hendrix.
“We’re gonna go eat as soon as this is done and get them out of the gym and get them off their feet,” Tiffen said. “I don’t want them sticking around. I want to get the whistles and the noise out. Luckily we’re at home and then go back to their bedrooms and just lie down.”
