Schreiner sweeps McMurry in SCAC home volleyball opener

The attendance of 850 marked a strong turnout for the Mountaineers’ home opener, as coach Jeremiah Tiffin’s squad demonstrated the depth and experience he has touted entering his fourth season.

Giana Hilliard led a balanced attack with 11 kills as Schreiner University swept McMurry 25-15, 25-17, 28-26 on Saturday at Stephens Family Arena in the Mountaineers’ first home match of the season.

The victory improved Schreiner to 8-3 overall while McMurry fell to 6-3 despite entering the match with a 1-0 conference record.

Hilliard, a junior outside hitter from San Antonio, recorded her match-high 11 kills on 37 attempts with just two errors for a .243 hitting percentage. She added nine digs and one service ace in the dominant performance.

Lauren Monaco provided strong support in the middle with seven kills on 12 attacks without an error, posting a team-best .583 hitting percentage. The junior also contributed four blocks in the win.

Setter Harlie Gallaspy distributed 10 assists while recording one kill and eight digs. Gaby Torres added 14 assists and eight digs from the setter position.

Libero Jenna Palomarez anchored the defense with a match-high 19 digs and added two service aces. Abby Meaux contributed 10 digs and recorded two aces as well.

The Mountaineers controlled the first two sets, winning by comfortable margins of 10 and eight points respectively. McMurry made a stronger push in the third set, forcing extra points before Schreiner closed out the match 28-26.

Ryleigh Jones added five kills on 12 attempts with two errors, while Mackenzie Strban contributed six kills. Jesse Garner rounded out the offensive attack with five kills.

For McMurry, Shaely Rogers led the way with 10 kills on 23 attempts. Carli Colbert added seven kills while Marcette Williams contributed seven kills for the War Hawks.

Schreiner will continue conference play when it travels to face Texas Lutheran on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
