Schreiner tennis battles, falls to Occidental

The men falling 7-0 and the women also losing 7-0 at the Schreiner Tennis Complex.

The Schreiner University men’s and women’s tennis teams faced a tough challenge on Monday, March 10, 2025, as they hosted Occidental College from Los Angeles. Both Mountaineer squads were swept in their matches, with the men falling 7-0 and the women also losing 7-0 at the Schreiner Tennis Complex.

Men’s Tennis: Occidental 7, Schreiner 0

The Schreiner men’s team struggled to gain momentum against a dominant Occidental squad. In doubles play, the Mountaineers were unable to secure a win. The duo of Ernesto Gonzalez-Molina and Ryan Morales fell 6-3 to Jack Yurich and Ace Andres in the No. 1 doubles match. Logan Sifford and Noah Salas also lost 6-3 to Konan Sahara and Dennis Isak in the No. 3 doubles match. The No. 2 doubles pair of Andrew Reyes and Cole Reed were shut out 6-0 by Brett Miller and Josiah Mones.

In singles play, Schreiner’s Darren Nava fought hard but ultimately lost to Ronald Chen 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match. Ryan Morales put up a strong effort in the No. 2 singles match, pushing Dennis Isak to a tiebreaker in the first set before falling 7-6, 7-4, 6-3. Cole Reed and Andrew Reyes also faced tough losses, with Reed falling 6-0, 6-1 to Benjamin Burrows in the No. 3 singles match and Reyes losing 6-1, 6-2 to Mason Hart in the No. 4 singles match.

Women’s Tennis: Occidental 7, Schreiner 0

The Schreiner women’s team also faced a tough outing against Occidental. In doubles play, the Mountaineers were unable to secure a win. The No. 1 doubles pair of Hannah Reyna and Addyson Grunberg were shut out 6-0 by Elina Shalaev and Greta Nagy. Katherine Bergeron and Ally Leonard also fell 6-0 to Isla Hall and Elise Jay in the No. 3 doubles match. The No. 2 doubles pair of Danielia Rodriguez and Mackenzie Griffin lost 6-2 to Sebaga Kombo and Sydney Sasaki.

In singles play, Schreiner’s Hannah Reyna fought hard but lost to Sebaga Kombo 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles match. Mackenzie Griffin fell 6-3, 6-2 to Julia Chun in the No. 2 singles match, while Danielia Rodriguez was defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Elise Jay in the No. 3 singles match. Addyson Grunberg and Ally Leonard were both shut out in their matches, with Grunberg losing 6-1, 6-0 to Nicole Anderson in the No. 4 singles match and Leonard falling 6-0, 6-0 to Isla Hall in the No. 6 singles match. Katherine Bergeron put up a strong fight in the No. 5 singles match but ultimately lost 6-3, 7-5 to Lilla Tanabe.

Looking Ahead

The losses to Occidental continue a challenging season for both Schreiner tennis teams. The men’s team now holds a 1-7 record, while the women’s team is 0-7. Both squads will look to regroup as they prepare for their next matches. The men’s team will travel to McMurry on Friday, March 21, while the women’s team will host Stevens on Wednesday, March 19.
