St. Thomas shuts out Schreiner men, 2-0

Schreiner will continue conference play Sunday when it hosts Centenary (La.) at 2 p.m. at Mountaineer Soccer Field.

chreiner University’s men’s soccer team dropped its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener 2-0 to St. Thomas (Texas) on Friday night at Mountaineer Soccer Field.

The Mountaineers (1-8-1, 0-1-0 SCAC) were shut out for the fourth time this season as the Celts (5-1-0, 1-0-0 SCAC) controlled much of the match with a 26-10 advantage in shots.

St. Thomas struck early in the first half when Jovany Garcia found the back of the net in the 18th minute off an assist from Angel Landaverde. The Celts doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Brandon Delaney scored unassisted in the 28th minute.

Goalkeeper Houston Schuman made five saves for Schreiner but couldn’t prevent the two first-half goals that proved to be the difference. The sophomore from Fort Worth faced seven shots on goal from the Celts.

John Mecke led Schreiner’s attack with three shots, while Braeden Taylor, Travis Matthews and Diego Ruiz each added one shot on goal. The Mountaineers managed just four shots on target against St. Thomas goalkeeper Jorge Gonzalez, who earned the shutout with four saves.

Schreiner generated more offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting St. Thomas 7-6 in the final 45 minutes, but couldn’t solve Gonzalez.

The Mountaineers were whistled for 10 fouls compared to six for St. Thomas. LaCondre Hall received a yellow card in the 39th minute, while Cameron Armer was cautioned in the 63rd minute.

Schreiner will continue conference play Sunday when it hosts Centenary (La.) at 2 p.m. at Mountaineer Soccer Field.

The loss extended Schreiner’s winless streak to five matches dating back to their 3-1 victory at Howard Payne on Sept. 11. The Mountaineers have been outscored 12-3 during that stretch.
