The Mountaineers falter in the 6th inning in 11-9 loss to Southwestern

Schreiner gave up five runs in the sixth inning and fell to Southwestern 11-9 in the opener of a doubleheader Friday.

Aryana Dunkelberger led Southwestern’s offense, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs and a double. Her two-run double in the sixth inning gave the Pirates an 8-6 lead, and Sophia Ytuarte followed with a two-run double to extend the advantage to 10-6.
Schreiner rallied in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles from Jeniffer Romero, Sarah Almazan and Romy Nunez, but the two-run deficit proved too much to overcome.
Romy Nunez paced Schreiner’s offense, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs. Isabel Moreno and Romero each added an RBI, while Payton Eubanks-Smith and Elizabeth Garcia each doubled.
The Mountaineers scored four runs in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. Sybohney Segura’s RBI single made it 2-1, and Romero followed with an RBI single to tie the game. Moreno then gave Schreiner the lead with another RBI single.
Anyssia Mendoza (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in three innings. Celina Marchan and R. Justice combined to pitch the final four innings.
Ytuarte earned the win for Southwestern, allowing nine runs on nine hits in 5⅔ innings. Mazlyn Heyer pitched 1⅓ scoreless innings to earn the save.
