Southwestern shuts out Schreiner to cape doublheader sweep, 11-0
Schreiner managed just three hits and was shut out by Southwestern 11-0 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Friday.
The Mountaineers (1-3) were held scoreless for the first time this season as Mazlyn Heyer pitched a complete game for the Pirates (2-0), allowing three hits while striking out two.
Cambryn Holloway, Payton Eubanks-Smith and Zoe Salinas each had a hit for Schreiner, which committed one error and grounded into three double plays.
Southwestern scored in four of six innings, building a 5-0 lead through two innings before adding two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Aryana Dunkelberger went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs for the Pirates, while Daniella Clark added three hits and two RBIs. Emery Bell scored three runs and Allie Fields had three hits.
Briannah Mejias (0-1) took the loss for Schreiner, allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings. Olivia Montoya pitched 3⅔ innings and gave up six runs on eight hits.
The Pirates scored twice in the first inning on an RBI walk by Tauryn Alexander and an RBI single from Clark. Dunkelberger’s two-run double highlighted a three-run second inning that made it 5-0.
Kaydence Garza hit a two-run triple in the fifth, and Macey Gilman capped the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth.
Southwestern swept the doubleheader after winning the opener 11-9.
