Trinity sweeps its way past Schreiner softball

Schreiner’s Abigail Sliman provided the Mountaineers’ lone highlight with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Trinity University dominated Schreiner University in both games of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday, winning 10-1 and 7-0 at Schreiner Softball Field.

The Tigers (27-7, 20-4 SCAC) showcased their offensive firepower in the opener, collecting 12 hits while the Mountaineers (7-25, 4-17 SCAC) struggled against Trinity’s pitching.

Trinity’s Sydney Watson delivered the knockout blow in game one with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, capping a steady offensive attack. Mariana Garcia led the Tigers with three RBIs on two doubles, while Angela Baltzell added two RBIs.

Jordan Arce earned the win for Trinity, striking out seven batters in four innings before Heather Nugent closed with three scoreless innings.

Schreiner’s Abigail Sliman provided the Mountaineers’ lone highlight with an RBI double in the fourth inning, scoring Haedyn Renslow. Sliman finished 3-for-3 at the plate but the rest of the lineup managed just three hits combined.

In the second game, Trinity’s Megan Kriechbaum silenced Schreiner’s bats with a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out eight.

Hannah Boudreaux and Mariana Garcia each homered for Trinity, while Baltzell continued her hot hitting with two hits and three RBIs.

Brinley Smith had Schreiner’s best offensive opportunity with a double, but the Mountaineers couldn’t capitalize as Kriechbaum consistently worked out of trouble.

The sweep extended Trinity’s winning streak against Schreiner and strengthened its position in the SCAC standings. The Mountaineers, who have lost three straight, will look to rebound at Texas Lutheran in a four-game series starting April 12.

Schreiner has played better at home this season (5-4 record before today’s games) than on the road (2-15), but couldn’t match Trinity’s conference-leading offense and pitching.
