Hunt residents plan Highway 39 demonstration as state lawmakers tour Camp Mystic on Monday
Organizers say flood survivors outside Camp Mystic have been left out of the investigation
Kerr County residents angered by the pace and scope of the state’s flood investigation are planning a demonstration along Highway 39 Monday as state legislators conduct a site visit at Camp Mystic.
Organizers are asking participants to gather at 12:15 p.m. along the highway corridor between Hunt and Ingram, at businesses that have permitted for demonstrators to stand. The flyer circulating on social media asks participants to make signs representing the 119 people killed in the July 4 flood. “Be respectful and safe,” the flyer reads. “Do not trespass, do not block the road.”
The demonstration comes as community frustration has sharpened around two specific complaints. Sen. Pete Flores, who represents Kerr County, has declined meeting requests from flood survivors and families until after a legislative committee hearing, according to organizers. And state-hired investigators, organizers say, have interviewed survivors from Camp Mystic but not from other locations devastated by the flood — including HTR TX Hill Country Campground in Ingram, where more than 30 people died, and the River Inn in Hunt, where multiple guests perished.
“Every flood victim and their families deserve answers,” organizers wrote in the social media post circulating the flyer.
