Flash flood warning issued for Kerr County as heavy rain triggers ‘considerable’ damage threat
Locations expected to see flash flooding include Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt, Vanderpool, Waltonia, Kerrville-Schreiner Park and Lost Maples State Natural Area.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Monday night for central Kerr County and northwestern Bandera County, warning of life-threatening flash flooding as thunderstorms dumped heavy rain over the area.
The warning is in effect until 1 a.m.
As of 8:04 p.m., radar indicated 2 to 4 inches of rain had already fallen in the warned area, with rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. The weather service said additional rainfall of 2 to 4 inches is possible and rated the flash-flood damage threat as “considerable.”
Locations expected to see flash flooding include Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt, Vanderpool, Waltonia, Kerrville-Schreiner Park and Lost Maples State Natural Area.
The weather service warned of life-threatening flash flooding of creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, and urged drivers to turn around rather than attempt to cross flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles, the agency said. Officials also cautioned that flooding is especially dangerous at night, when hazards are harder to see, and warned campers and hikers to stay away from streams and creeks.
The warning comes as a flood watch remains in effect for Kerr County and 20 other South Central Texas counties through Thursday evening.
