Kerr County’s calendar overflows as Fiddler on the Roof takes the Cailloux Stage

This week, the marquee event across Kerr County is a musical one. Fiddler on the Roof opens a three-performance run at the Cailloux Theater, with shows Friday evening, Saturday evening, and a Sunday matinee to close out the run. The production anchors what is, by any measure, an unusually packed stretch of community life in the Texas Hill Country, one that illustrates just how much is happening in this corner of Texas on an ordinary week.

A tally of this week’s public listings, compiled from The Kerr County Lead’s community calendar, turns up roughly 87 distinct happenings between Monday, July 27 and Sunday, August 2. That works out to an average of a dozen events a day, ranging from sunrise fitness meetups to late-night karaoke, though the week builds steadily toward a weekend crescendo, with Saturday alone carrying roughly 20 separate listings.

Downtown, The Arcadia Live is doing double duty as both cinema and gathering space this week. Thursday brings “Hope for the Guadalupe: The River Will Heal,” a Fin and Fur Films documentary revisiting the catastrophic July 2025 flash flooding along the Guadalupe River and the coalition of Texans now working to restore it, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. The following evening, the century-old venue hosts a hometown screening of “River of Angels,” billed as a chance for the community to gather and reflect together.

Out at the Texas Hill Country Atelier on Water Street, Saturday’s Open Studio Life Drawing session continues a tradition the nonprofit art school traces back more than two millennia: drawing from a live model as a way of training the eye. The drop-in session, open to non-students for a modest sitting fee, is part of a broader slate of classical, mentorship-style training the atelier offers along the Guadalupe, with additional multi-day workshops in egg tempera painting and a visiting-instructor “conclave” already filling up for late August.

And out at Crider’s, Kerr County’s rodeo tradition, dating back roughly a century, runs its regular Saturday-night program: a rodeo at 8 p.m. preceded by catfish plates and acoustic music at the cafe, followed by a live country dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., with the cafe serving until midnight.

The rest of the week fills in around these anchors. Outreach and social-service groups host food pantries and grief support sessions early on, the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library alone runs nearly a dozen programs from toddler story time to an author talk, and live music runs through nearly every night at venues like Gravity Check Saloon, the Inn Pub, and Roddy Tree’s Lazy Days Canteen. Taken together, the week underscores a pattern local organizers often point to: even outside of festival season, Kerr County’s calendar rarely has an empty day.
