Mackey’s last-second layup lifts Schreiner to 84-83 victory
Mountaineers survive rugged second-half against visiting Concordia in key SCAC matchup.
Schreiner University guard Dylan Mackey scored on a layup with nine seconds left in the game to lift the Mountaineers past visiting Concordia, 84-83 on Friday night.
In a rough and tight matchup, the two teams traded leads five times in the final two minutes before Mackey hit the game-winner. The win is a lift for the Mountaineers after being wiped out by Trinity on Monday night. Schreiner improves to 9-3 and 2-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Mackey scored 19 points, including 14 points in the second half, and senior All-American Kamden Ross scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The Mountaineers weathered a monstrous game by Concordia’s Joey Ramirez, who scored 22 of his game-high 32 points in the second half. Ramirez grabbed 19 rebounds and hit five 3-pointers.
The Mountaineers held a narrow 37-34 lead at halftime but stretched it to 11 points, 60-49, with 10 minutes left in the game.
However, this game may not have been close if Schreiner had hit its free throws. Concordia’s freewheeling style of play resulted in 36 fouls, leading the Mountaineers to the free-throw line 47 times, where they converted 23 shots.
Holding that 11-point lead, the Mountaineers missed six consecutive free throws during a 15-4 Concordia run that put the visitors back into the game. Fortunately, the Mountaineers’ top three scorers delivered in the final minutes of Friday’s game to help Schreiner dig out.
Schreiner returns to action at 6 p.m. today against McMurry in another crucial conference matchup.
