Martin Luther King Day lead the week’s busy agenda of events

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration begins at 11 a.m. at the Doyle Community Center and will feature a guest speaker reflecting on Dr. King’s life and legacy, followed by lunch. The event is free and open to all community members.

Kerr County will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today with a special celebration at the Doyle Community Center, launching a week packed with cultural events, live music, and community gatherings.

“All are welcome,” organizers said of the event, which continues a tradition of honoring the civil rights leader’s contributions to American society.

Renaissance Festival Returns

The Kerrville Renaissance Festival opens its 10th season this weekend at River Star Arts & Events Park, running Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will proceed rain or shine, offering visitors a journey back to medieval times with period entertainment, crafts, and activities.

The festival coincides with the Kerrville Winter Market at Inn of the Hills, which also runs both weekend days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cultural Celebrations

Saturday evening brings Burns Night to Kerrville Favorite Saloon at 6 p.m., celebrating Scottish poet Robert Burns with traditional haggis, neeps, and tatties. The event will feature bagpipe performances and recitals of Burns’ famous works, giving attendees a chance to don their kilts and tartans.

Nature and Science Programs

Riverside Nature Center hosts several educational programs this week, including a free NEd Talk on Botany Primer Tuesday at 1 p.m., and the Wildflower Bunch gathering Wednesday at 10 a.m. Junior naturalists ages 8-12 can join Riverside Rangers Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon for nature exploration through science and art.

On Friday, certified Texas Master Naturalists will be available from 10 a.m. to noon for one-on-one consultations about environmental stewardship and conservation.

Live Music Scene

The week features an active music lineup across local venues. Highlights include Country Nights Open Mic at Gravity Check Saloon Thursday at 6 p.m., and a house concert with Mike Blakely Friday at 7:30 p.m., with a $20 requested donation benefiting the artist.

Saturday’s musical offerings include performances by Graham Scott Hempstead at Singing Water Vineyards, Kevin McCormick at Turtle Creek Vineyard, and the theatrical production “Leading Ladies of Broadway” at Cailloux Theater at 7:30 p.m.

Community Gatherings

The Kerrville Genealogical Society meets Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the GBNRC/UGRA Building, with guest speaker Courtney Carr presenting on Preserving WWII Genealogy. The free event is open to the public.

Book clubs meet throughout the week, including the Talking Texas Book Club Thursday at noon discussing “She Came to the Valley” by Cleo Dawson, and Cupid’s Round Table Book Club Saturday morning reviewing “Seven Year Slip” by Ashley Postin.

Markets and Vendors

Both the Hill Country Heritage Farmers Market and Heart of the Hills Farmers Market operate Saturday morning, running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their respective locations on Junction Highway and Water Street.

Veterans can join free yoga sessions every Monday at 3 p.m. at the Kerrville Elks Lodge with instructor Rick Trzcinski of the Veterans Yoga Project.

Growing up in Southern California, Louis Amestoy remained connected to Texas as the birthplace of his father and grandfather. Texas was always a presence in the family’s life. Amestoy’s great-grandparents settled in San Antonio, Texas, drawn by the city’s connections to Mexico and the region’s German communities. In 2019, Louis Amestoy saw an opportunity to make a home in Texas. After 30 years of working for corporate media chains, Louis Amestoy saw a chance to establish an independent voice in the Texas Hill Country. He launched The Lead to be that vehicle. With investment from Meta, Amestoy began independently publishing on Aug. 9, 2021. The Amestoys have called Kerrville home since 2019.
