Mountaineers fall to LaGrange after surrendering early lead

The Mountaineers (0-3) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning but watched LaGrange (2-0) storm back with three runs in the bottom of the frame and seize control with a four-run fourth inning.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Schreiner University could not hold a four-run advantage, falling to LaGrange 11-6 Saturday in non-conference baseball action.

Daniel Rodriguez paced Schreiner’s offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Blake Juarez collected three hits including a double. Shawn Rivera added a double and drove in a run for the Mountaineers.

Schreiner struck first in the second inning when Ethan Costello scored on Rivera’s RBI double. Daniel Rodriguez followed with a two-run single, and Juarez’s double plated Rodriguez to give the Mountaineers a 4-0 cushion.

LaGrange responded immediately, scoring three times in the bottom of the second. The Panthers seized the lead for good with four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Collin McGhee’s two-run double that gave LaGrange a 6-5 advantage.

The Panthers extended their lead to 7-5 when Jackson McElvy grounded out to score McGhee, then put the game away with a four-run eighth inning. Colin Jones’s two-run double was the key blow in the decisive rally.

Schreiner added a run in the ninth when Nolan Harris scored on a passed ball, but it was too little too late.

Henry Sepulveda (0-1) took the loss for the Mountaineers, allowing six runs on four hits over 3.1 innings. Wyatt Henry, Hayden Oakes and Logan Sifuentes provided solid relief work, combining for 3.2 innings and allowing just one run, but Evan Park and Aleksander Kowalczyk struggled in the eighth.

Eduardo Peralta (1-0) earned the win for LaGrange despite allowing five runs in two innings. Trystin Merson and Blake Myers held Schreiner scoreless over the middle innings.

McGhee finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs for the Panthers, while Jones added two hits and two RBIs.

The Mountaineers return to action Friday when they host Centenary at 2 p.m.
