Schreiner baseball stuns Texas Lutheran, snaps 9-game series losing streak

Rivera, Harris homer as Mountaineers top SCAC’s first-place team

The Schreiner Mountaineers handed one of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s top teams a resounding defeat Saturday, turning back Texas Lutheran 9-5 in front of 220 fans at Schreiner Field to snap a nine-game losing streak in the series.

Texas Lutheran entered the game with the SCAC’s second-best conference record at 12-4 and a 17-7 overall mark. The Bulldogs had won nine consecutive meetings against the Mountaineers, a run stretching to April 2023. The victory improved Schreiner to 12-14 overall and 10-7 in conference play.

Starting pitcher Tanner Beck set the tone on the mound. After Texas Lutheran staked a 2-0 lead in the first inning on unearned runs, Beck settled in and worked five frames, surrendering six hits with no earned runs and striking out three to earn the win and improve to 2-2 on the season.

Schreiner answered quickly. Daniel Rodriguez scored on a Bulldog error in the first to trim the deficit to 2-1, and the Mountaineers evened it in the second when JD Blair came around to score. The game turned in the fourth inning when Jacob Gonzales singled home a run to give Schreiner its first lead, and Shawn Rivera followed with a three-run home run to extend the advantage to 6-2.

Texas Lutheran closed to 6-4 in the sixth on a two-run single by Cooper Jen, but Nolan Harris answered immediately with a solo home run to push the lead back to three. JD Blair added an RBI double in the seventh to make it 9-4, and Max Sauceda and Daniel Cardenas combined for four innings of relief to close out the victory.

Harris went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Blair finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Rivera drove in a team-high three runs on his fourth-inning blast.
