Symphony of the Hills to perform at Trinity University benefit concert for flood victims

“Our orchestra members suggested that the symphony perform in San Antonio as a sign of outreach and community partnership in responding to the great need present in our area from the flood devastation,” said Eugene Dowdy, conductor and artistic director.

The Symphony of the Hills will perform a benefit concert Oct. 16 at Trinity University to support victims of recent flooding in the Hill Country.

The Kerrville-based orchestra, which draws its 70 professional members from throughout the Hill Country and San Antonio, has partnered with Trinity University for the event at Laurie Auditorium, 1 Trinity Place. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

One Trinity University student and the daughter of a university coach died during the July 4 flood in Kerr County.

Symphony musicians volunteered their services for the performance, titled “A Time To Remember: Tribute Concert for Kerrville.”

“Our orchestra members suggested that the symphony perform in San Antonio as a sign of outreach and community partnership in responding to the great need present in our area from the flood devastation,” said Eugene Dowdy, conductor and artistic director.

The Trinity University Department of Music and Laurie Auditorium co-sponsored the event, providing the venue and musical support through the Trinity choirs under Director Gary Seighman.

The program includes Gustav Mahler’s Adagietto from Symphony No. 5, movements from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Amy Beach’s “Gaelic” Symphony and Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet in A with soloist Vanguel Tangarov. The concert will conclude with Arvo Pärt’s “Da pacem Domine” for choir and orchestra featuring the Trinity University choirs.

Admission is by donation, with all proceeds benefiting flood victims.
