Dr. Kristin Hook, a Democratic candidate, discussed her campaign for the open Texas 21st Congressional District seat, which is being vacated by the outgoing Chip Roy. Hook, who holds a doctorate in animal behavior, positioned herself as a “tech expert” and argued that recent redistricting has made the seat more competitive. She also advocated for universal healthcare.

Kevin La Fond, former commander with the United Cajun Navy, detailed his transition to a local role with the new Kerr County-based nonprofit, Foundation Unites. La Fond stressed that the community is now in the “invisible scar” phase of recovery and announced an upcoming partnership with Bush’s Baked Beans for a community festival to boost morale. He also acknowledged the ongoing search for flood victims Cile Stewart and Jeff Ramsey.

In local politics, Devan Burns spoke about her candidacy for the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace seat, emphasizing the JP’s critical role, including conducting inquests for death certificates.

Finally, Deb Rouse announced the 54th Annual Kerrville Folk Festival lineup, which runs from May 21 through June 7. Rouse noted that the festival canceled a fall event to focus on flood relief, raising $100,000 for local nonprofits. Headliners for the three weekends include The Wilder Blue, Steep Canyon Rangers (Steve Martin’s backing band), Andy Frasco, and Trout Fishing in America.
