Mountaineers drop season-opening baseball doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Schreiner University’s baseball team struggled in its season opener Friday, dropping a pair of games at a tournament in Montgomery.

In the opener, LaGrange broke open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth to put the game away. Schreiner managed just five hits against three LaGrange pitchers.

Blake Juarez drove in Schreiner’s lone run with a first-inning single that scored Shawn Rivera, who had doubled and stolen a base. Rivera finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Nolan Sauceda took the loss, allowing seven runs on 13 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Tanner Beck provided 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three.

The Mountaineers committed four errors in the game, including two by right fielder Nolan Harris.

The second game proved even more difficult as Huntingdon jumped on Schreiner for three first-inning runs and cruised to the run-rule victory. The Hawks pounded out 18 hits and scored six runs in the sixth inning to invoke the mercy rule.

Kale Lackey provided a bright spot for Schreiner with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Blake Juarez added two hits and an RBI, while Daniel Rodriguez doubled.

Freshman Ethan Sullivan suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in two innings. Four Schreiner pitchers combined to allow 16 runs, 15 earned, on 18 hits.

The Mountaineers committed four more errors in the nightcap, bringing their total to eight in the doubleheader. Daniel Rodriguez made four errors at second base across the two games.

Schreiner (0-2) returns to action Saturday against LaGrange.
