Schreiner softball earns split against Mary Hardin-Baylor

The Mountaineers get another masterful pitching performance in game one, but falter offensively in game two.

Game 1 (Schreiner’s 3-0 win):

Anyssia Mendoza dominated in the circle and at the plate, tossing a complete-game shutout and driving in a run to lead Schreiner University to a 3-0 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Mendoza (2-0) scattered two hits over seven innings, striking out three without issuing a walk while facing just 23 batters. The right-hander also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI to power the Mountaineers’ offense.

Schreiner (2-3) scored all three runs in the second inning. Payton Eubanks-Smith led off with a single and scored on Mendoza’s RBI double to left field. Zoe Salinas reached base and scored when Gracie Rue singled to the pitcher, with Mendoza taking third. Isabel Moreno then singled to left field, plating Mendoza with the final run.

The Mountaineers finished with eight hits, led by Mendoza’s three-hit performance. Jeniffer Romero, Sarah Almazan, Rue, Moreno and Eubanks-Smith each added a hit.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (0-3) managed just two hits off Mendoza – a double by Ryleigh Mills and a single by Addy Todd. Alli Dafoe (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

Game 2 (Mary Hardin-Baylor’s 12-1 win):

Mary Hardin-Baylor scored in five different innings and pounded out 13 hits to run away with a 12-1 victory over Schreiner University in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

The Crusaders (1-3) broke open a scoreless game with a five-run second inning and never looked back, building leads of 5-0, 7-1 and 8-1 before adding four insurance runs in the sixth.

Riley Marek led the offensive onslaught with two RBIs, while Bralyn Belk, Jordan Iverson and Brielle Moreland each drove in a pair. Addy Todd, Ryleigh Mills, Belk and Angelina Rodriguez all had two hits for Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Schreiner (2-4) managed just five hits and committed four errors in the defeat. The Mountaineers scored their lone run in the third inning when Payton Eubanks-Smith grounded out to third base, scoring Isabel Moreno.

Zoe Salinas led Schreiner with two hits, while Sarah Almazan, Anyssia Mendoza and Isabella Stewart-Munoz each added a hit.

Katherine Neal (1-1) earned the win for the Crusaders, allowing one run on four hits in three innings. Kearsten White (0-1) took the loss for the Mountaineers, surrendering six runs on five hits in 3.1 innings.

The doubleheader drew 250 fans for the nightcap after the opener was played before an empty stadium.
