Schreiner University opens softball season with doubleheader split
What a difference a game makes! After falling 12-2 in the season opener Wednesday afternoon, Schreiner University’s softball team roared back in the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split against visiting Texas A&M-San Antonio, 5-4.

In the first game, the Mountaineers committed four errors, and the visiting Jaguars took advantage. Schreiner held a 1-0 lead, on the strength of a Hannah Kollmansberger home run, but the wheels came off in the fourth inning when the Jaguars scored six runs, four of those runs coming on a grand slam. Texas A&M-San Antonio added two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to blow the game open.

Schreiner’s Danielle Pedraza hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning.

In the second game, the Mountaineers shored up their defense and got an outstanding pitching performance from Kylnne Kusack, who struck out five. The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Jaguars clawed back to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning.

In Schreiner’s half of the fifth, Pedraza singled and later scored on an error. The Mountaineers took the lead for good when Kourtney Hurry hit an RBI single that scored Yadira Lopez.

Texas A&M-San Antonio threatened in the seventh inning after scoring on a sacrifice fly. The Jaguars had runners at second and third when Sam Gaona grounded out to second baseman Annie Wallace. The play ended the game and gave Schreiner its first win of the season.

The Mountaineers hit the road next week for six games over four days, with stops at Houston-Victoria, McMurry and Hardin-Simmons.
