St. Thomas scores twice in the second half to sink Schreiner women, 2-1

St. Thomas scored twice in the second half to rally past Schreiner 2-1 on Friday night in the Mountaineers’ Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener.
Jess Sinclair gave Schreiner (1-4-0, 0-1-0 SCAC) an early lead, scoring unassisted in the 23rd minute. The Mountaineers carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime despite being outshot 5-4 in the opening period.
St. Thomas (4-2-2, 1-0-0 SCAC) responded in the second half with goals from Ashlee Stoltje and Fernanda Alvarado. Stoltje’s equalizer came in the 48th minute off an assist from Emma Cerda, who finished with two assists on the night. Alvarado netted the game-winner in the 59th minute, also assisted by Cerda.
The Celts outshot Schreiner 14-7 for the match and held a 9-2 advantage in second-half shots. St. Thomas goalkeeper Kylie Soich made three saves to earn the victory, while Schreiner’s Emilie Novasad stopped four shots in the loss.
Abby De Hoyos led Schreiner’s attack with three shots, two on goal. Kailey Ellsworth also registered two shots for the Mountaineers.
St. Thomas was whistled for eight fouls compared to six for Schreiner. The Celts’ Alyssa Zubia received a yellow card in the 89th minute.
The loss drops Schreiner to 1-4-0 overall as the team continues its search for offensive consistency. The Mountaineers managed just four shots on goal and were held scoreless in the second half for the second time this season.
Schreiner returns to action Sunday when it hosts Centenary at noon in another SCAC contest.
