Tivy girls lose nail-biter to Boerne Champion, 42-40

The Antlers are doomed by a poor second quarter, but rally in the fourth in key district matchup against Boerne Champion.

It was a coulda game for the Tivy High School Lady Antlers — like having the second quarter over again against Boerne Champion. In a district matchup, the Antlers scored just four points in the second quarter, giving visiting Boerne Champion enough room to wiggle past Tivy, 42-40.

The loss was Tivy’s second consecutive and first in the district, where the Antlers are 3-1. However, Tivy showed it could put pressure on teams with defensive pressure and some last-minute grit.

Trailing 40-28 at the end of the third quarter, Boerne Champion looked like it was cruising for a win, but they stumbled badly in the fourth quarter. Turnovers almost doomed the Chargers, and they ultimately sank Tivy. With two seconds remaining, the Antlers couldn’t get the ball inbounds cleanly to either tie or win the game.

Kyea Wheathall led the Antlers in the fourth quarter with eight points, and Riley Dill added four before being knocked out of the game late with a severe cramp in her left leg. Dill, however, was Tivy’s offensive and defensive rock, with a team-high 16 points.

The Antlers play at Wagner on Friday.
