Schreiner men earn draw to snap losing streak; women lose twice

Schreiner University's men's team play to a 1-1 tie in testy match against Howard Payne.

Schreiner University men's soccer team snapped its four-match losing streak with a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Howard Payne on Saturday.

Schreiner's Alex Trandai scored in the ninth minute of the match to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. Howard Payne knotted the match at 1-1 with a goal in the 68th minute by Christian Drake.

It proved to be a testy match between the two universities. Both teams were hit with three yellow cards and a red card each. Seven of the eight penalties came after the 86th minute.

Like in its 1-0 loss to visiting McMurry, Schreiner put plenty of pressure on Howard Payne's defense only to come up short scoring. The Mountaineers fired off 27 shots, including nine saved by Howard Payne goalie Eduardo Flores.

Schreiner goalie Kameryn Roehrig made five saves on the match.

In Friday's loss to McMurry, Schreiner had three early opportunities to score only to have McMurry goalie Orion Patterson turn them away. McMurry scored in the 62nd minute and held on for a 1-0 victory.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Howard Payne scored four goals in the first 20 minutes to cruise past host Schreiner University on Saturday, 4-1.

The Mountaineers added a Charlie Rand goal in the 21st minute, but it wasn't enough to spark Schreiner to a win. The goal was Rand's second of the season.

The Mountaineers have lost five consecutive matches and have been outscored 20-4.

In Friday's loss to McMurry, the Mountaineers gave up three goals after halftime in a 4-0 defeat. The Mountaineers fired just one shot against the McMurry defense.
