Tivy girls clamp down on Canyon in fourth quarter, 44-37

Riley Dill leads the Antlers with 14 points, but the defense shined in a fourth quarter that stymied visiting New Braunfels Canyon.

Riley Dill scored 14 points and Solaya Gorham added 11 as the Tivy High School girls’ basketball team won their third consecutive district game with a 44-37 victory over visiting New Braunfels Canyon on Friday night.

It wasn’t an offensive thing of beauty, but the Antlers clamped down on Canyon’s offense in the fourth quarter, limiting the Cougars to four points. The victory keeps the Antlers in the hunt for the district title at 7-2, and 16-5 with just five games remaining on the schedule.

“We did a good job fourth quarter, especially we got some much needed rebounds,” said veteran Tivy coach Christy Dill. “We finally started crashing the boards on both ends.”

The Antlers gave Canyon almost no second-chance efforts in the fourth quarter. Canyon dug itself out of a 21-15 halftime hole and surged in the third quarter to outscore the Antlers 18-12, entering the fourth quarter tied 33-33.

Tivy came out for the fourth quarter ready, and Emma Schumacher hit two shots, and Maddie Fielder added another to power the Antlers to a 6-0 run with 5:09 left in the game. The Antlers also played a pretty good game of keep-away to close out the game.
