A stellar night of music with images of Mia Borders, Next of Kin and Hayes Carll. Next of Kin showed why it’s set to play Austin City Limits with a rousing set. Hayes Carll was able to make up for last year’s rained-out performance.
Growing up in Southern California, Louis Amestoy remained connected to Texas as the birthplace of his father and grandfather. Texas was always a presence in the family’s life. Amestoy’s great-grandparents settled in San Antonio, Texas, drawn by the city’s connections to Mexico and the region’s German communities. In 2019, Louis Amestoy saw an opportunity to make a home in Texas. After 30 years of working for corporate media chains, Louis Amestoy saw a chance to establish an independent voice in the Texas Hill Country. He launched The Lead to be that vehicle. With investment from Meta, Amestoy began independently publishing on Aug. 9, 2021. The Amestoys have called Kerrville home since 2019.
The evening moves from intimate songwriter craft through indie-rock sensibilities to the high-energy punk-country fusion that defines modern Americana’s edge.
The Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter took to the stage at 10 p.m. and was nonstop for an hour, including a crowd surfing moment and dancing with a little girl who wandered onto the stage.
The second weekend of the 54th annual Kerrville Folk Festival opens Friday with a night that moves from intimate folk songwriting through soul and country before landing on one of Nashville’s most decorated writer-performers, and closes with a Canadian duo carrying both a Grammy and grief.
