Folk Festival headlines a packed week of music, art, and community events

Opening night on May 21 features Jamie Lin Wilson, Rich O’Toole, Amanda Anne Platt & the Honeycutters, and The Wilder Blue. Food and craft booths open at 6 p.m., with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. at the Kennedy Outdoor Theater.

The 54th Kerrville Folk Festival opens Thursday evening at Quiet Valley Ranch, kicking off an 18-day run that brings national and regional acts to the Hill Country through early June.

The festival continues Friday with Yasmin Williams, Joshua Ray Walker, Kuinka, and The Bright Light Social Hour; Saturday with S.G. Goodman, Bandits on the Run, Next of Kin, and Steep Canyon Rangers; and Sunday with Julian Taylor, Marshall Crenshaw, Madeline Edwards, and Nether Hour. The festival isn’t the only draw this weekend. The 23rd Annual Texas Masters of Fine Art & Craft Invitational Show runs Friday through Sunday at the YO Ranch Hotel — 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Information is at texasmasters.com.

Saturday night, Crider’s Rodeo and Dancehall returns with its weekly rodeo and dance. The cafe opens at 6:30 p.m., the rodeo starts at 8 p.m., and Cactus Country takes the dance floor at 9 p.m. Ticket and table information is at cridersrandd.com.

The week’s live music extends well beyond Quiet Valley Ranch. Thursday evening brings the Maplewood Brothers to Howdy’s Bar & Chill and Jason Kane & the Jive to Lazy Days Canteen at Roddy Tree. Friday’s lineup includes the Flashbacks at Truffles & Vines, Mick & the Maestros at the Elm Waterhole Saloon at the YO Hotel, the Maplewood Brothers at The Arcadia Live for its On Deck Happy Hour, and the Q-Tips at Lazy Days. Saturday features Hogan & Moss at Pint & Plow, Kyle Lindley at Trailhead Beer Garden, Velvet Groove at Truffles & Vines, and Vanishing Bees at Howdy’s, among others.

Earlier in the week, the Texas Master Naturalist Hill Country Chapter hosts a free public meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at the GBNRC/UGRA Building. Guest speaker Bill Neiman of Native American Seed will present on ecological restoration with native seed. A Zoom option is available; details are at txmn.org/hillcountry.

The Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library has a full slate mid-week. Tuesday’s Talking Texas Book Club takes up “Big Wonderful Thing: A History of Texas Part 1” by Stephen Harrigan at noon. Wednesday brings a Friends of the Library Book Sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., an author visit from Kenneth Robert O’Neal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a Naturalist Book Club discussion of “The Light Eaters” by Zoë Schlanger at noon. Thursday’s Mystery Fiction Book Club discusses “The First Conspiracy” by Brad Meltzer at noon.

The Kerrville Genealogical Society meets Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the GBNRC/UGRA Building, where Paula Stewart-Warren will present on using deeds for genealogical research. The event is free and open to the public.

Also Thursday, Third Thirsty Thursday Trivia returns to The Arcadia Live Theater at 6:30 p.m. Entry is free, prizes are awarded, and teams of up to six can pre-order Pint & Plow pizza and appetizers when they RSVP.

Saturday morning offers the Hill Country Heritage Farmers Market at 301 Junction Hwy and the Heart of the Hills Farmers Market at 741 Water St., both running 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Kerrville Walking Group also heads out at 8 a.m.; visit kerrville.xyz for the meeting location and route details.

Author

Growing up in Southern California, Louis Amestoy remained connected to Texas as the birthplace of his father and grandfather. Texas was always a presence in the family’s life. Amestoy’s great-grandparents settled in San Antonio, Texas, drawn by the city’s connections to Mexico and the region’s German communities. In 2019, Louis Amestoy saw an opportunity to make a home in Texas. After 30 years of working for corporate media chains, Louis Amestoy saw a chance to establish an independent voice in the Texas Hill Country. He launched The Lead to be that vehicle. With investment from Meta, Amestoy began independently publishing on Aug. 9, 2021. The Amestoys have called Kerrville home since 2019.
