The third Kerr County resident to die from COVID-19 in November was reported Saturday by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
The latest person died in an out-of-county hospital on Nov. 8, according to a spreadsheet maintained by DSHS. Earlier this week, Peterson Health reported its first COVID-19 death in more than a month when one of its intensive care unit patients died. That death happened on Nov. 16.
There is no clear explanation if DSHS includes Peterson deaths in its numbers. When Peterson noted its death on Wednesday, it counted 138 Kerr County deaths, but DSHS never adjusted that number. On Saturday, DSHS reported 138 — making it appear it was tallying Peterson's fatality. However, the deeper dive into the numbers reveals that Peterson and DSHS numbers rarely align. The Lead does not believe that Peterson's fatalities have corresponded with the state's since December 2020, artificially driving down Kerr County's death toll. The death appears to be the 199th since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020.
On Friday, DSHS numbers — notoriously behind what's happening in real-time — suggested that as many as 90 people had active infections in Kerr County. At least 10 students and staff were positive for the virus in the Kerrville Independent School District.
Since Aug. 1, at least 56 people have died from the virus in Kerr County.
