Heritage center grand opening anchors action-packed week across Kerr County

The week’s calendar reflects the full range of what Kerrville and the surrounding Hill Country do well.

A milestone cultural moment headlines what shapes up to be one of the busiest weeks of the spring in Kerr County, with more than 60 events spanning the arts, outdoors, civic life, food and family set to take place between Monday and Sunday.

The Heart of the Hills Heritage Center opens its doors Saturday at 10 a.m. after a ribbon-cutting on Friday morning at the same location. The grand opening runs through 4 p.m. and promises free admission, activities, demonstrations, live music, and what organizers are billing as a community celebration. More information is available at hhheritagecenter.org.

The week’s calendar reflects the full range of what Kerrville and the surrounding Hill Country do well.

On the cultural front, the Cailloux Performing Arts series brings “The Sinatra Experience” to the Cailloux Theater on Saturday evening, while the VK Garage Theater runs its production of “Sense & Sensibility” — based on the Jane Austen novel — on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Arcadia Live hosts a screening of “The First Wives Club” as part of its Iconic Film Series on Wednesday night, and pianist Stephen Fandrich performs a free 45-minute solo improvisation at Turtle Creek Vineyard on Friday evening.

Live music spans nearly every night and nearly every genre. Pint & Plow Brewing Co. hosts The Great Trumpet on Friday. Singing Water Vineyards has Tim Russo on Saturday afternoon and The Klocks Saturday evening. Central Provisions books the Aiden Berg Trio on Saturday. Those looking for something a little louder can find karaoke at Gravity Check Saloon on both Friday and Saturday nights, and the Heartbreak Outlaws play there Tuesday.

For those drawn outdoors, the Kerrville Police Department hosts a free Fun Run at Louise Hays Park on Saturday morning, open to walkers and runners alike. The Riverside Nature Center’s annual Big Sit runs all day Saturday, and a guided Bird Walk & Talk is scheduled for Wednesday morning, with registration required for location details. The Texas Watersheds Cleanup also departs from Central Provisions on Saturday.

Families have no shortage of options. Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library runs children’s programming every day through Saturday, including Lap Sit Story Time for ages 3 and under, Duplo Club, Lego Club and a Gardening 101 session. The Ridge Marketplace hosts Toddler Time with an astronaut theme on Tuesday morning. The Ingram Duck Derby school fundraiser takes place Friday evening.

The civic and community calendar is equally full. The Hill Country Chapter of Texas Democratic Women meets Tuesday at 125 Lehman Drive — open to everyone, organizers say. The Kerr County Friends of the Night Sky holds its monthly meeting Thursday at the Riverside Nature Center beginning at 4 p.m., with new members welcome. The Great Decisions Discussion Group at Butt-Holdsworth takes up U.S.-China relations in the current political era on Tuesday at noon.

Two significant events cater to professional and agricultural audiences. The Enterprise Security Summit 2026, co-presented by Schreiner University and the Hill Country Defense Alliance, fills the CCAC on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Kerr County Soil & Water Conservation District hosts the Cow Pokes & Land Folks Conference at the Hill Country Youth Event Center on Friday.

Veterans are served twice this week. Rick Trzcinski of the Veterans Yoga Project leads a free class every Monday at the Kerrville Elks Lodge at 3 p.m. The Hill Country Veterans Center hosts its Veterans Food Bank on Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m., offering food, haircuts and clothing to those with valid Texas ID and proof of service.

The week closes out appropriately: Sunday is Mother’s Day. Kerrville-Schreiner Park is offering free entry all day, and the Scott Schreiner Golf Course is giving out free driving range tokens. Several wineries and music venues carry programming through the afternoon and evening.

Author

Growing up in Southern California, Louis Amestoy remained connected to Texas as the birthplace of his father and grandfather. Texas was always a presence in the family’s life. Amestoy’s great-grandparents settled in San Antonio, Texas, drawn by the city’s connections to Mexico and the region’s German communities. In 2019, Louis Amestoy saw an opportunity to make a home in Texas. After 30 years of working for corporate media chains, Louis Amestoy saw a chance to establish an independent voice in the Texas Hill Country. He launched The Lead to be that vehicle. With investment from Meta, Amestoy began independently publishing on Aug. 9, 2021. The Amestoys have called Kerrville home since 2019.
